What you probably need to do is read the SAML Technical Overview [1]. The 
Shibboleth IdP implements the IdP portion of that model. The SP implements 
the SP.

There's also material that's very general at [2].

General SAML questions can go to the OASIS saml-dev list, and general 
Shibboleth questions need to go to the users list, not our dev list.
