It should be relatively unintrustive.  I'll make the sortKey attribute optional of course and I'll have to fall back to something else (probably the id) in the case of a tie.  Also it will be important to issue warning when the sortKey is being ignored and when it is absent but expected.

Yes, it also checks for circular dependency and is better placed to issue more meaningful warnings.
