"what metadata are you using"

I was talking to Alex from Edinburgh the other day, about an issue they had which boiled down to be uncertain as to exactly which metadata (if any) the CDS was using for a given entity ID. For debugging purposes, he suggests, it would be useful to have an endpoint (perhaps protected, perhaps disabled by default) on which one could query the CDS with an entity ID and get back the actual metadata the CDS was using for that entity ID.
Obviously, this is something that would also be helpful in some cases while debugging weird metadata interactions on the SP or IdP, too. I'm bringing this up here for now rather than just submitting a Jira case on the CDS because of this cross-product aspect.
Probably also obviously, he was put in mind of this by the metadata query spec, which would be the obvious thing to apply here. The more complicated parts of that, like cacheing and signing the result, don't seem necessary for this use case.
It seems to me that each of these products probably already has an internal API through which metadata for a given entity ID is resolved, and if so this might not be very hard to implement.
Any comments?
