I think it probably is worth doing. The rule of thumb for these things I always tried to stick to was to assume that there will always be more new people coming along in the future than have ever used it in the past, so cleaning things up (with some kind of compatibility for existing users) is always beneficial in the (possibly very) long term.

Documentation and the default configuration would be the places I'd assume we'd prioritise changes.
