I've always visualised branches rather literally as actual branches in a tree of states where the edges are deltas (commits, checkins) and tags as labels on locations in the tree. That's how the system I first used worked (PVCS, which I guess is a CVS variant) on a per-file basis, and it's very much the model in Git at a per-repository level. That more familiar (to me) model is undoubtedly part of why my brain finds Git a good fit.
I just don't find the "branches-are-copies, tags-are-copies model" that Subversion uses to be particularly intuitive. Never have done. That's a purely personal thing, though.
