Yes, this kerfuffle calls up the concerns over sustainability that CIFER has encountered.  I know there are lots of factors at play here and it's not a simple picture.  However, if the global higher ed and research communities are SEEN to be struggling to support something as ubiquitous and valuable as the Shibboleth project and package, we will have trouble saying "Let's do more open source infrastructure development!"
