And I wanted to note that Scott's work here has been *greatly* appreciated
and is the reason why the SP is part of Debian (and Ubuntu), which has
been very helpful for us at least and hopefully for others as well.  But
this is also a much simpler problem from the packaging side, since
packaging C++ libraries and Apache modules is well-trod ground and has
simple tools and clear policies.  Java web applications are another matter
entirely.

At least some of it, and at least "extremely difficult."  I think that, in
the long run, there is going to have to be some movement and some improved
tools on the distribution side to understand the Java deployment model and
to find better ways of integrating it with a distribution packaging system
before it's going to be feasible to package much Java software in a
fully-compliant way.
