The reason the packages were named this way was SUSE, I followed their conventions because theirs were strict and the rest didn’t care, so it was easiest to use one convention. I also actually liked it because they put the main so version into the names, allowing side by side installs, whereas Red Hat’s convention doesn’t.

I’m not sure I’m following the core issue, we could probably discuss Friday. If this isn’t working on Amazon Linux in the sense that it’s not installing the package I meant it to, that’s obviously a concern. I’m fairly reluctant to actually use any of the built-in versions but I’m also out of experience leery about changing package naming. Obsoletes never seemed to work properly in the past.

I would have to say that the state of anything Red Hat provides is unknown. They did finally do some work on it but that was only after years of ignoring it.
