This is likely random noise, but in some other playing around I’m doing without a servlet container, I’m noticing indications that logback may in fact default to DEBUG if it’s not being given some other starting point. Logging spin-up is a black art to be sure.

Given that we removed a stray copy of logback.xml from someplace it shouldn’t have been I’m wondering it that was masking this behavior. As a workaround, I’m wondering if it’s possible like with log4j to specify a static configuration file at startup, I’ll check the docs.
