Back in early V2 they got it wrong and we were completely shafted when upgrades started overwriting stuff. I’m pretty sure that they fixed ant so it does the “right” thing - certainly noone has complained that it does the wrong thing (apart from people using Ansible to install - but don’t get me started)

In V5 I’d rather like to change to the more module-type way of doing things and make things checksum based (if the checksum has changed do not overwrite, otherwise overwrite or create). Off the top of my head this is sort of like the way that we do with the modules

At the same time I’d want to strip out our last use of any as the underlying engine and take full control (the way we do for plugin installation).

But I’m going to take this back to check that the windows install does do the correct thing - I think it does from the code (because it works from dist\webapp but I'd like to test ,
