Agree endless retry would not be the best option.

What I would see as sensible in this case (all connections in the pool are open to a server that has gone dead) would be to:
1. Keep trying with other connections from the pool
2. After these are exhausted, try establishing one new connection based on the current connection strategy.
3. If that fails as well, report an error.

Alternatively, it could be:

* if a connection from the pool fails, try replacing it with a NEW connection - and if that fails, report an error.

Would either of these sound sensible to you?
