Amazingly, the restrictions feature in versions:display-dependency-updates actually seems to work in the latest version of the plugin:

mvn -DallowAnyUpdates=false -DallowMajorUpdates=false \
   -Dmaven.version.ignore= "1.4.*,1.82,2.4.0-b*.*" \
   versions:display-dependency-updates

It’s still janky (and a number of those options are slated for removal in the next major version) but it’s now pretty useful for filtering things like future version betas and major updates out.
