attribute renaming

I seem to recall that it is possible to rename an attribute within a metadata configuration tag. If this possible.
So instead of creating a custom attribute definition in conf/attributes/custom.xml, one can use something like this:

<saml:AttributeValue>sn lastname</saml:AttributeValue>

However, I am unable  to find [see] an example.
