problem with adAuthenticator - non printable characters added to username

Probably one of the properties that constructs the DNs (depending on how that AD thing works I guess, but that seems the most likely).

I assumed a live system. If you're doing isolated testing, it helps to note that as it rules out many things and puts others on the table.
