It does work, but not when there's a parent bean in the mix. Your bug was moved to IDP-2433, it doesn't require the OP to be involved.

We'll resolve once you test the proposed workaround there and I added it for now to the Known Issues list on the Release Notes page until we ship 5.2.1 at some point. It's too early and this appears to affect too few people so far to rush a release out until we get more bug reports on more critical issues that I am sure are coming.
