They *can* be if you want to get off legacy options and avoid warnings, but they don't have to be replaced. The namespace is what determines how strict it is about older/newer settings, and it allows some new settings to be added that wouldn't be allowed with the older namespace.

The error is self-explanatory compounded by ignoring the log telling the OP exactly what broke and why.
