It's the logging that you have to fix, everthing else is secondary sicne you can't really debug anything without that addressed.

Not familiar with Ubuntu enough to guess at causes, Pete's suggestion is probably a good one.

I'd just start it from the command line directly as a workaround to get past that issue temporarily or at least to rule out causes.
