"Bad signature length" in request

I'm seeing this response to an incoming SAML request to Shibb IdP:
 ERROR [10.5.3.52] org.opensaml.security.crypto.SigningUtil:215 > Error
during signature verification: Bad signature length: got 512 but was
expecting 256

What controls the signature length? What needs to be done to correct?
