"too many open files" error

Our Shibboleth IdP v5.1.2 became unresponsive this morning with repeats of
this error in logs:

ERROR [net.shibboleth.shared.security.impl.BasicKeystoreKeyStrategy:394] -
IOException updating key version:
/opt/shibboleth-idp/credentials/sealer.kver: Too many open files


A restart restored operation, but I'd like to understand and remedy what
may have gone wrong. Here's the environment info from the internal status
command (after the restart):
