You're probably referring to the JAAS configuration file, the name is arbitrary. There is no "ldap.config" file we have ever provided or used. The default JAAS file was login.config I think.

JAAS hasn't been a common thing for a while, all the other methods largely supplanted it and the chaining support it used to be good for is mostly doable with the IdP native now. But it's still a supported validator type.

Most LDAP use cases should be handled by the native support and no longer should require tons of ugly XML to handle.

If it can't be done with LDAP or JAAS without a ton of messing around, I wouldn't do it.
