I would do the usual sanity check and point the property at a non-existent bean ID. I can't imagine it's actually using the config you think if it's not storing anything.

Not much adoption of 5 but the plugin has been used by people on 4, plenty of bug reports on it.

There is no "fall back" sort of model with the storage, it couldn't really have a backstop.
