Problem Releasing Custom Attribute

I created two custom attributes -- Username and DisplayName -- and added
them to the relevant policy in attribute-filter.xml. Running aacli.sh
returns them with the correct values. And when I attempt to log into an
SP,  idp-process.log shows them in the list of attributes being released.
However, SAML-tracer shows that they are not being sent and the login fails.

I've created custom attributes a handful of times in the past and never ran
into this. Any ideas? I'm at a complete loss.
