Dear Colleagues,
It has been some time since the last pre-release of the Shibboleth Metadata
Aggregator product: v0.9.2 was released in October 2016. This has been deployed
in production by a number of sites, including performing an important role
in the tooling used by both the UK federation and InCommon. Since then,
however, a lot of work has gone towards an 0.10 release intended to modernise
some of the APIs, incorporate some of the functionality developed for those
key deployments, and generally prepare for a formal 1.0 release.
You can see the changes currently incorporated in 0.10 here:

At the moment, we anticipate a release of v0.10 in early 2023, although in
many ways it is quite usable today.
We had previously intended the 0.1/1.0 releases to be targeted at the same
baseline as the Identity Provider v4 product. However, time has moved on
and it now seems prudent to shift the requirements for the new release to
align with the upcoming Identity Provider v5 instead. This will give the
release some additional longevity without needing to be immediately concerned
with EOL dates for Java 11 and Spring Framework 5.
The new requirements for the planned MDA 0.10 release include:
- Java 17 (the current LTS release of Java)
- Spring Framework 6 (GA release expected later this month)
If you are developing for Spring Boot, this also means that the new release
will work best with Spring Boot 3.
Details of supported Java distributions will be identified closer to the time
of release. These will however include at least Amazon Corretto 17 and OpenJDK 17
as shipped with RHEL 8- and RHEL 9-based operating systems.
In these days of cloud computing and containers, we don't expect this change in
requirements to be as impactful as it would have been a few years ago. If it
will prove problematic for your adoption, however, we'd like to hear from you.
We'd also love to hear from users who would be interested in participating in
testing for the new release.
