Viewing the default version of a conf file from a module

When upgrading (and I have the time...), I like to look at the default
versions of config files in order to compare them to our config. I try to
track changes made upstream to keep our config roughly comparable to the
defaults, other than when we have intentionally configured things
differently.

The dist directory is very useful for this, as I can run diffs between
files in here and our config. However, the new module systems complicates
this a bit, as config files belonging to modules are not included in the
dist directory. In fact, it seems the default versions of these files only
exists somewhere within the jar files.

Is there an easy way to view the default version of these files? The only
two I'm aware of at the moment are to enable the module on a separate
installation and look at the files it creates, or to delve into jar files.

Thanks,

Max Spicer
