Only be reversing the condition everywhere else, but it's not generally warranted.

The best answer is to never allow custom encodings that aren't part of the standard, and the second best answer is to avoid extra work to accommodate it. The other end isn't going to see the duplicate or you wouldn't need it in the first place.
