shibd not writing to its log files

Hi Shibboleth users
It turned out that shibd did not have write permission on the files, but did not report that.
Normally, of course, shibd writes errors, warnings, and so forth to its log files. But it’s a special situation when shibd cannot write to the log files, for any reason. If it were my software, I would have it recognize that special situation and convert all exceptions that arise from being unable to write to the log files into error messages to stderr (or the equivalent on non-Unix platforms).
These error messages would help people like me who
