servlet access of Attributes via Server Variables?

(Prelude/Pre-script: Re my recent other question, sessionHook completely meets my business needs. Grateful for the conversation that led me to that.)

On https://shibboleth.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SP3/pages/2065335257/AttributeAccess#Server-Variables , Rod strongly suggests that we use server variables to access attributes. Much preferred, eg, over using headers.

I agree, and wonder how to access these variables – I think my apache is advanced enough to support.

In my java code I have access to the HttpServletRequest. Are we these server variables the sort of thing I would get via
…myHttpRequest.getAttribute(“attributeName”) ?

If not, any guidance as to how I can get at these server variables in my servlet?

Thanks, - Carl
