So it's not enough that they choose to have bilateral ad hoc metadata exchange with their customers instead of using a federation, it seems they also decided to use a commercial SSL certificate for their SP and rotate it yearly:

Annoying manual metadata maintenance not just once at initial integration, but on an annual basis 8-/...
