I have more experience with worker than event, but ultimately it's just a question of determining the thread count inside shibd to determine if that factor is actually involved at all. I don't recall the command offhand that can show that but I believe there is one.

Not for free (and ultimately probably wouldn't be much help officially but I'd at least try).

Other than using large metadata files, I don't know of any other factor that leads to that sort of growth if the thread count stays reasonable.
