Something in between. I have been developing some applications directly
on my Mac. For this, Shib directly installed on my Mac was useful.
However, we don't use it on any servers or for any production services.

Yes, it's with mod_php. Might be worth a try. For developing purposes
using FPM should be less of a problem I suspect but - at least some time
ago - I read that there could be issues with FPM for production services.
