Thanks. I think I'll stick with "try initiating a session and see if it fails." For one, I want this to be invokable from a web app, which running a command line tool is not so much.
E.g. https://shibbolethsp.jstor.org/Shibboleth.sso/Login?entityID=https://bogus.saml.id will take me to an error URL. At least one of the reasons that would happen is that the entity ID is not valid.

Not elegant, but there's an mdquery command line utility. Since it uses an SP's configuration to run, it would probably need to be set up with an MDQ configuration to keep it workable since it loads all the metadata sources into the command line process.
