Default subject type for locally registered (filesystem metadata) OIDC clients

We've got a locally registered OIDC client who's complaining that logins aren't being recognized for existing users any more since our upgrade to V4. I don't see a setting that determines the default subject type used for locally registered clients if the subject_type key isn't in the metadata, and I'm trying to figure out if I somehow inadvertently changed the default. I see a setting in idp-oidc.properties for setting the default for dynamic registrations if it isn't specified, but nothing for local filesystem registrations.

Is there a default? If so, where is it set, and might it have changed between IdP V3 (with v1 of the OIDC extension) and IdP V4 (with V2 of the extension)?
