As somebody that's been stuck maintaining Apache-hosted code for over ten years now, that sort of nonsense is entirely on brand for the ASF and a lot of its projects.

I will say that having not spent much time messing with HTTP/2, I couldn't say if proxying that is perhaps less incredibly painful than HTTP. I just know proxying HTTP sucks and causes no end of problems for applications and systems. AJP doesn't. It's really not close.
