404 because shibd redirects to /Shibboleth.sso/SAML2/POST ?

If you're HTTP-proxying that's not a redirect to tomcat.
But why HTTP in the first place and not mod_proxy_ajp?

That doesn't sound like a message from Shibboleth. If that's from
Tomcat then you must prevent Apache httpd from also proxying
/Shibboleth.sso to Tomcat.
