Yes, they fundamentally can't work together.

The actual number of SPs that do true mass discovery is not large, and the ones that do are moving to solutions like SeamlessAccess.

For the rest...you can't make the impossible work. There are various solutions to building discovery feeds out of band that the EDS can use, all unsupported and one-off at this point. 

We use one Ian threw together [1] on shibboleth.net.

Somebody at OSU built one in Python recently (no, I can't provide it).
