IDP 4.01 CAS authentication issues

We are currently upgrading our test environment  to  Shibboleth IDP 4.01 and we are having issues with CAS authentication.  The issues are the same as in the OSJ-323 bug https://issues.shibboleth.net/jira/browse/OSJ-323

There is mention of a fix but it is vague as to what it is as the issue is still considered open and unresolved.  Has anyone been able to resolve this?
