Compatibility of shibboleth sp and idp versions

Then you can prepare to upgrade to IDPv4 which already exists.

Compatibility doesn't run along the lines of Shibboleth software
versions as should be clear from both products interoperating widely
with non-Shibboleth implementations, too: That's why standard
protocols such as SAML 2.0 (or SAML 1 or any of the other protocols
supported by either the IDP or the SP or both) exist.
