log or error messages for LDAP authN via JAAS

A secondary LDAP authentication component in my production jaas.config has
stopped working.
I do not see any errors or indication of connections, failures or warnings
in the idp-process.log with logging at INFO for LDAP.
Do I need to use DEBUG level or is there somewhere else to look to help
diagnose the errors; the administrator of the LDAP service says they see
"invalid connection".
Output of OpenSSL from the command line of the IdP seems to indicate
trusted cert and encrypted connection established (by the OpenSSL command
itself).
