I have fixed this and it will stop throwing the exception in the next release (which will be 4.0.1 or 4.1.0).

Many thanks for your assistance in turning around this bug so quickly.  I'll let Ian and Peter comment on the metadata side - all I
have done it stop the IdP complaining about strange input.
