As an aside, this is a constant internal struggle for me as I see testers run into this sort of thing all the time, particularly with unspecified name formats. I've gone back and forth on whether SAMLtest should support all of the non-standard attributes it receives with appropriate warning text prepended, but thus far I've chosen to encourage deployers to follow the standards rather than accommodate all the creativity that has been applied in SAML 2.0 deployment today. The logs are always available to testers so they can see the results regardless of whether they fit the standards, after all.
