Apache mod_auth_saml vs Shibboleth Service Provider

The use of the Apache mod_auth_saml as a way to SSO against my 
Shibboleth IdP was just part of a conversation today.

Starting at a high level, what the difference between using the Apache 
mod_auth_saml vs the Shibboleth Service Provider approach.
