The issue may be that I am not using a trustFile attribute, I have my certs in the jvmTrust. I'll reconfigure and see what my results are.

Using ldaps URLs does that already if startTLS is off (and it's off by default anyway). I have simply ldaps URLs with a trustFile attribute specified for the CA to use, works fine.
