My testing conditions were unfortunately catching the exception so I didn't notice it wasn't caught where it should have been. I think you would find that the cause of the crash was the most simple one, the keys being out of sync. It would have to be a key with the right version but not matching the one with that version used on a different server. The fix prevents the crash but nothing can make that actually work of course.
