It isn't either/or. if you have metadata that somebody's relying on (securely or not), change it properly and only in the ways it needs to change, wait for the propagation window, and it will work *for them*. Nothing is going to make it work for anybody else.

Since anybody with static settings is a flag day anyway, you can at least allow the few that aren't doing it that way to pretty much ignore the change, at least until you want to eliminate the old host/redirect entirely.
