Makes sense. I was a bit unclear about the purpose of separate storage services with the light option when I read the docs. This helps.

Yes, it just reduces the impact of a storage failure to breaking logout, which is why the StorageServiceLite option is in there to divert that set of storage calls to a separate back-end.
