You can, and usually you should when it's a value like an email address, but that is entirely optional.

Adobe also doesn’t require the use of email addresses as an ID, and you shouldn't use them that way, for the obvious reasons. They require that it be provided, but they allow, and you should use, an appropriate identifier for the users.
