Injecting username into the IdP login field from an SP request

Hi all

I setup our moodle to login users via Shibboleth - that was going fine, UNTIL I was told we HAD to support guest and manual users in moodle (as well as Shibboleth). Previously, users with network accounts logged in to moodle via LDAP.

What we're working on is a custom login page on moodle, which offers the login as guest button (for open access information pages) and manual logins (for partners -we don't want them using LDAP).
The idea is that, the username field on our custom login page, when tabbed away from, will do an AJAX call to check the authentication type of the user.
IF the auth type is Shibboleth, we want to redirect them to the login page - one line of javascript to trigger moodle's Shibboleth trigger, fine.

BUT we want to inject the username they have entered already, to save them entering it twice.
Is there a way to trigger a request for a shibboleth session, sending their user ID?

If you want a demonstration of what we're trying to mimic, think of the Office 365 login method...

1) Go to login.microsoftonline.com

2) Enter userid at yourinstitution.com<mailto:userid at yourinstitution.com> as the email address

3) Spinny thing appears, then you get redirected to your on-site ADFS IdP and (certainly on ours) you find your username pre-populated

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Dave
