I'm not in a position to explain (or refute) that but that does sound
a bit magical to me: If the module was not in fact loaded (with the
OP's current configuration) then initiating a session using the shib
handler directly also couldn't worked (/Shibboleth.sso/Login by
default), which apparently it did?
