I didn't tell you to RTFM, I pointed you at the part of the manual that answers the question, and in my mind that *is* pointing you in the right direction.

I then gave you, in English, the exact steps you have to follow.

If you want me to speculate as to what you did wrong (and you provided no logging, so how could I do anything else but speculate?), I would guess that you're trying to map in an Attribute with a NameFormat other than the one the SP supports by default and that you didn't supply a matching nameFormat attribute in the <Attribute> rule(s) you created. And that is explicitly noted in the documentation.
