Remote user authentication need help

Hi Team,
I am trying to do Tomcat's
 container based authentication. I have these questions in my mind
1. How Tomcat tells the IDP about the remote user details after
authentication.
      (In the wiki pages- if Tomcat has remote user principal name in the
header then IDP will authenticate the user. So how IDP Will read this??)
2. Who will maintain session Tomcat or IDP
3. How SSO flow will work if I choose container based authentication. (how
IDP knows the user has valid session)
